The Quilters Net has been keeping me quite well and truly occupied of late. From requests for specific quilts, to processing sales for members to producing newsletters (not many lately), life is well and truly full.

Many new quilts have been listed for sale and many enquiries are received daily which all require attention.

In fairness to my Quilters Net membership, I must devote more time and energy to their needs. Although I will continue to stop here from time to time with newsworthy items, my visits will be less frequent. For updates and news at The Quilters Net, I encourage you to subscribe to our free newsletter here as well as following us on Facebook

Double Wedding Ring Made Easy

Here's my first block in this fun workshop at The Quilt Pattern Magazine How much fun it is to learn a new technique for a lovely old traditional pattern.

As you can see I have utilized a dark background and lighter rings for a completely non-traditional effect. I have not decided how big (or small) I will make the project. Decisions such as those will be made along the way :-)

This is actually part 2 of the 5 part workshop and I am definitely looking forward to the next step. August 1 which is tomorrow.

Hmmm........Wonder what a miniature one would look like using this technique???????

Vinatge Postage Stamp Quilt

How many hours do you think it would take to make a postage stamp quilt? This type of quilt is well named as each piece of fabric is generally 1 inch in diameter.

Since rotary cutters arrived on the scene here in Atlantic Canada around the mid 80's, one can only assume each piece was individually cut out using a template.
Carefully stored, never used, this quilt has been drastically reduced to $650 for a quick sale.

Pattern Launch

Having never been involved in a Pattern Launch before we had no idea what to expect. Pat and I primarily wanted our guests to have some fun. Judging by the level of chatter in the room, I believe we succeeded.

On a rather cool Wednesday evening in the Snug Harbour at Lanes Privateer Inn here in Liverpool, we welcomed quilters and non-quilters as well as Editor Nick from The Advance .

Delicious "Lanesmade" chocolate chip cookies, coffee, lemonade, a virtual tour of The Quilt Pattern Magazine and our Twist and Twirl Quilt were front and center.

The First Robin of Spring

We here in Nova Scotia always herald the first robins as we know spring is not far behind. On the calendar, spring arrived March 20, but the winter winds did not yet get the message. The robins, however, have arrived this year in our neck of the woods so we are certain the warm weather will soon be along.

Like the first robin of spring, I have a first officially happening on April 1st. My friend and quilting colleague Patricia (aka Pat) Paul were in cahoots last summer and decided to have a go at pattern design. Since we are both seasoned stitchers, we decided to pool our talents and challenge our brains to think in a different direction.

I had already created the block on EQ6 which we used for the virtual quilt. Several design changes and border revisions later, Pat chose the colours (she's a genius with colour) and stitched the quilt top. The addition of the embellishments added the "smack" we were looking for. Now it was time to send out some pictures and see what developed. Complete newbies, we were completely surprised to receive an almost instant aceptance of our pattern from The Quilt Pattern Magazine

Cindy, Maria and Carol have supported and guided us along an amazing and rather surreal journey which we are delighted to share. Cindy and company are currently offering Quilting Guild members a chance to win a free subscription which you can enter right here.

Around the Table

Where does the time go?    Are we having fun yet?   Well I don't know about you, but I am, and here's some proof  I don't spend all my time making virtual quilts. This one is real.

I love Karen Neary patterns and you may remember I posted about Yuletide Jewel in the past.   I made 2 Jewels and gave both to my daughters for Christmas.

Well here's my version of Karen's newest just released "Around the Table" centerpiece and placemats. Haven't done the placemats yet but have a look at the centerpiece Is this not gorgeous?

I couldn't wait to share the picture, threads and all. The center star just fairly jumps out of the center. When my hubby looked at it, he remarked it looked like it was designed in 3D. Who knows when I'll get it quilted!

Quilting at White Point

Boxing Day and Quilting!

I love the hustle and bustle of Christmas and the family gatherings and the food and the noise and the fellowship and the hugs and the music and the smiles and........

But is not Boxing Day the greatest? I get to sleep late, put my feet up, look at my quilting magazines and books that I invariably get in my stocking, play with any gadgets, and eat leftovers (or planned extras).

This year I gave my hubby a new book entitled" A Nova Scotia Guide to Frugal Living". It occurred to me I should chat about "Frugal Quilting". After all isn't that how quilting got started originally. From old shirts and dresses and flour bags, just to name a few sources.

I must be a throwback to those days as I absolutely love to sift through bins at "Frenchys" or other such stores to find a treasure of fabric. Perhaps it brings back memories of digging through the old clothes in the attic in my grandmothers house. Here's a lapel broach I created from a dolls dress and a button.

I've just recently picked up a delightful cotton sea scape with tiny mariners compasses that would be perfect for my next postcard.   And you never know when a quilter friend might need a bit of sea to add to their latest artistic endeavor.

Local yard sales are perfect for finding fabric treasures.   Animal shelter organizations often have "new to you" stores as well as Salvation Army and Value Village.   You never know what you may discover.

Last summer I found a treasure trove of Crimpknits in bright yellow to donate to talented artist who uses it for her folk art quilts.

Another Sparkling Jewel

Well Karen it's not pink, but ...............this is my second Yuletide Jewel and it was a struggle! But the final result was worth every single stitch.

Working with the gold lame was a challenge and seemed to fight me every step of the way. However, I can be a determined quilter and sometimes one just needs to step back, take a deep breath, go for a walk, or put the project away for a few days. Then it's full speed ahead and it's finally finished.

Some tips if you're working with lame:

Try sample stitching with various needles to see which works best. I used a 70 embroidery in my machine for the best results with this project.
Use the same thread in the bobbin and the top. Cotton worked best for this thin lame
Use a lightweight backing (nonwoven interfacing was needed with mine)
Sharp, thin, glass head pins work better than the yellow headed quilting pins.
Give lame a try if you haven't already. It's good to stretch our expertise as well as have a laugh or two

And I do plan to make a third one. Maybe I get some pink in this one.......

Hurricaine Earl

It's been just too hot and muggy to quilt! Who ever heard of +39 degree weather in September here in Nova Scotia?

Wind and rain are the order of the day here at Lake Mush a Mush. Earl is coming through as I write and will, no doubt, bring along the more seasonal fall weather which I love.

Several stitching projects are there just hanging out waiting for me. I'm developing a new creation for a "Welcome Wagon Generations Showcase" happening in November. Primary colours, pastels, set on a tone on tone background. I'll keep you posted.

In the meatime I hope all you quilters and bloggers are safe and well.

"Yuletide Jewel" wins First Prize

The Big Ex in Bridgewater, Nova Scotia, is a fun place to display your quilts. Having entered items in the past, I decided to jump in with all stitches again this year.

My 2010 entry was "Yuletide Jewel", a pattern by Karen Neary, which garnered me a First Prize red ribbon. What a fun experience it is to enter your creations in a show. A tremendous sense of accomplishment to have an independent judge hang a ribbon of any colour.

I encourage all you stitchers to support your local exhibitions and enter your creations. It's ever sew much fun.

Charm Square Coasters

Recently I was looking for directions (online of course) for those funky easy square coasters. One of our lovely guild members had quickly demonstrated them before a previous meeting and silly me didn't think to ask the size of the square blocks used.

So of course I could find all the details I was sure. Not only did I find the details but I found a different version (pretty much the same technique) and qickly set about making 66 of them for gift bag donations. Did not take me too long and I had great fun slashing my stash to find unusual and fun fabrics.

At the last minute of course, I decided to take a sample along with me to the Scotties Tournament of Hearts in Sault Saint Marie. You know, just in case I met a quilter or two. Now whaddya think the chances of that are??? Well as I sat in the Essar Center watching curling, I shared the technique. Quilters are found everywhere and seem to be instantly recognizable. Although I was sure I had shed all those threads, telltale signs appear. Quilted bags for one!

From Saskatchewan, thru Ontario, NS and NL, these coasters will now emerge I'm sure. A sure sign we quilters are alive and well.......

Inturn, Outturn

And we think quilters are passionate about their craft. Coach Carole MacLean has taken her love of curling to a new fashion level. Not only has she had personalized plates for her vehicles, Inturn and Outturn, but she has had the old plates made into an outstanding purse. A show stopper indeed!

Coming from a family of curlers (hubby, son and daughter all are involved) Caroles enthusiasm and knowledge about the game of curling is infectious. And her practical approach to motivating her team through the rough spots is a pleasure to behold.

When the curlers are around, the buzz words are hurry, hard, sweep, in the house, on the four foot, and so on. A whole new language it seems. And I suspect these curlers might not have a clue when we talk about fat quarters and charm packs.

Now in between games, I'm off to the nearest fabric shop for a "quilters fix".

Scott Tournament of Hearts

Let me tell you it's cold in Sault Saint Marie. Now we Bluenosers complain bitterly when it snows for a day or two and we have -10 degree weather. Well we certainly have had a rude awakening here at "The Soo". -21 degrees when we arrived and it has not gotten any warmer.

However as cold as the weather is, the people are warm and friendly just as we like to think we are in the Maritimes.

We are having a marvellous time. Julie is here too all the way from Corner Brook, NL so it's a family get together all round. Jeff arived today to add to the fan base. Unfortunaltely Shannon had to work (Oh well, someone has to keep the economy going!)

Our bright yellow "souwesters" have been a real hit with the media and the locals. And Wayne has been busy waving the Nova Scotia flag, or should I say handing out Nova Scotia pins. A true ambassador for our Canadian East Coast.

We've been meeting some marvellous curlers and their families, walking short distances, swimming in the pool here at our hotel and certainly watching the curlers in the spectacular "Essar" Center. Named for a family involved in the Algoma Steel industry here in Sault Saint Marie, this new center is a terrific venue for the Scott. Holding 5000 people it is centrally located just off Queen Street and, for us, just around the corner.

Well Done Team Nova Scotia

And what a week it was.

From the opening ceremonies to the closing trophy presentation, Liverpool was abuzz with curlers. Our house in Moose harbour was home to Team McConnery for the week, including Coach Carole MacLean with her capable assistant (aka daughter) Caeileigh. There were foam beds, air mattresses, quilts, pillows and people in most every room.

Even though many of our friends offered accomodations (with real beds), the team wanted to stay together. A tribute to their friendship and their dedication to the sport of curling.

And a payoff at the end of the week after nailbiting curling games was the win and another trip to the Scotties Tournament of Hearts in Sault Saint Marie.

Dance with my Spider

Funny how sometimes you just need to put a project to the side for a bit and when you get it out again it takes on a life of it's own. That is exactly what happened here. I simply was not getting any inspiration, quilters block I guess. At any rate when I picked this up again 3 days ago it seemed to just lead me along the path to completion.

The leaves are gently dancing in the breeze and seem to beckon one to participate. Upon close inspection, you may see the spider web.

As I sit here looking out at the snowy scene unfolding at the moment (a weather bomb they say) it occurred to me those of us who stitch, read, or have hobbies are quite fortunate. Translated that means a great day to stay indoors and let those creative juices flow.

Secret Treasure Window Instructions. Whew! What a challenge. It's always great fun to demonstrate a new project but getting it on paper with pictures is another story. I am a visual learner and can describe most anything reasonably accurately. And I have the utmost respect for those of you who are developing patterns on a regular basis.

Through The Stable Window

A number of years ago I had a subscription to Country Woman magazine in which Tom Hunt

was a featured artist. His "Away in a Manger" nativity scene captured my imagination and I kept those pages (although not the rest of the magazine) and looked at them often.

It's always interesting where and when inspiration strikes, but I was so taken with the wooden pieces, I felt I needed to create a fabric piece to reflect the soft, clean lines.

Although I'm certainly not an artist, it didn't take me long to draw what I wanted. It did, however, take me much longer to create the piece. The stitching always seemed to take second place to other projects.

When finished, many who saw my work, entitled "Through the Stable Window", asked for the pattern which I have just recently developed. It is my very favorite Christmas piece.

The pattern is now available for sale and I hope you enjoy it as much as I enjoyed creating it.

Stitching Up Christmas

What fun we had. 16 participants spent a couple of hours stitching up this delightful Christmas Window. This age old technique was popular during Victorian times and was primarily used to make bed coverlets. With several layers of fabric but no batting, this is a fantastic project to take along on your travels, whether plane, train or car. Stitched in the same manner, everyone learned the technique, and experienced the "Aha" moment when the "window" was installed.

This is sort of a stitch, fold, stitch, fold project and before the last seam is sewn, the "secret pocket" is revealed. By all accounts, the class participants were heading home to get their fabrics ready for more windows.

Yikes it can't be November already! We don't have snow as yet here in our end of the woods but I do need to cover my fall mums. A heavy coating of frost was covering the jackets my hubby placed over them last night.

Hmmm, maybe I need to make quilted "Mum" covers. That might be a whole new use for those patches I've never finished. I could use it over my flowers any time of the year, right? It would be particularly useful for those summer flowers I can't seem to grow. Might it have something to do with the fact I can't seem to remember to water or fertilize them? Oh well, quilted flower covers seems like so much more fun........

Next to stitching, I love to make bread and pies. Here's my homemade Flax Bread just out of the oven. I'll be happy to share the recipe upon request. And no, I don't use a bread maker. I've been making bread for so long it seems just second nature to make it by hand and it's a great way to relax while kneading that dough. A bread maker would ruin all my fun!

A Pumpkin Pie and Apple Pie are cooling as well. Later today, we're joining neighbours here at Lake Mush-a-Mush for our first annual Thanksgiving pot luck dinner.

Everyone has something different to contribute and the hosts are preparing deep fried turkey.
We've heard it's a real treat and are looking forward to it.

Next week we will be heading back to our home in Moose Harbour. The firewood pile has shrunk to a few days supply so the countdown is on. It's been a great summer and fall.

Nova Scotia in September

Oh the fresh breezes of September. The signs of summer are fast disappearing and we're heading to my favorite time of year. Still at our summer cottage, our routine changes. An evening walk, rather than a morning or afternoon swim.

This fall we are starting what I hope will be a new tradition. Thanksgiving in our summer cottage neighborhood. This will be, in part, due to the fact we purchased a new wood stove to keep us warm, and partly due to new neighbors who stay longer.

After a busy, on the road summer, the quiet is delightfully deafening. Perfect for a quilting project, which I shall share shortly.

Solving the Roadblocks to Quilting

I love making quilt tops. Seeing the actual pattern evolve in the colours I've chosen is always so very exciting.

My trusty Husqvarna seems to just sew on it's own when I get on a roll. But.... a roadblock seems to occur when it comes to the finishing part.

Although I do love to sit and stitch while listening to my favorite Leonard Cohen music, there are several steps in the process I do not enjoy. Getting the quilt on the frame is a perfect example. I have tried several different methods of "loading" my quilt on the frame. I've gotten down on the floor and basted the quilt together and then rolled it on my frame. I've loaded the frame with the top, batting, and backing separately. Either way is a challenge for me. And truthfully, I begrudge the time it takes me to get the quilt finished. I could, after all, be spending time blogging, or creating a pattern, or fondling my fabric, all perfectly acceptable pastimes, right?

And the more I sew, the more I love to use my sewing machine for everything I can. With the wonderful quilting machines on the market today and the fabulous quilters that are in our local areas, it is usually my choice to send out the tops for finishing.

A Quilters Travel Tip

Isn't it interesting how the light bulb turns on? In our minds I mean! On a recent trip to Newfoundland via ferry, I was sitting in my cabin, hand stitching a few patches together. I simply wasn't happy with the finger pressing and wished I had brought along my mini iron.

I did, however, have my curling iron which was plugged in ready to tame my curly hair. Well, I tried it on my patches instead and, voila, it worked! And what works even better is a flat iron hair straightener, which I tried when I arrived at my daughters home. It's a bit hotter than a curling iron so just be careful not to scorch. If you arrive at your next workshop without your mini iron, you can wow all the participants with this tip.

The birthday (continued)

What a blast it was. All my siblings, many family members and lots of quilting friends. I was speechless, really, but once I got my head on straight, I had the time of my life. Everything done, loads of food, details all under control, how sweet is that?

Don't you just love the "flowers"? These certainly won't fade, but may disappear when the summer neighbours twins drop by. Just look at all those circles. Hmmmm......a quilt with circles and swirls would be nice. And as for 60, according to the experts, 60 is the new 40 and we're not boomers, we're zoomers.

Zooming seems to be a lot of what I do these days as our family is grown and it's just Wayne and I rattling around. We take full advantage of this freedom and do so enjoy spending time at our cottage, visiting our kids and families cycling, golfing (not me) and of course, stitching.

Have you ever heard the expression, "like a deer caught in the headlights"?

Well now I know how it feels!

Ever so craftily these two daughters orchestrated a party for my 60th birthday which, it would appear, everyone in the Atlantic provinces knew about but me.

And I thought I could smell a rat for miles! Apparently it was 3 months of planning and lots of "Mums the word" stuff.

Don't you just love the decor? Not even enough fabric in those thongs to patch a pair of panties.

Yup, my two daughters who fought tooth and nail as kids are now partners in birthday surprise parties, with hubby as a willing ally.

Home Again, Home Again, Jiggety Jig

Mowin', Weedin', and Laundry! The realities of bein' back home.

But it is nice to be back home really, even though the weather is dreary and cool. The bonus is...... we don't need to be too concerned about UV rays. And it is great stitchin' weather.

Here's a picture of my latest creation "Yuletide Jewel" from a Karen Neary pattern. This will make the sun shine in my house on Christmas. I may even experiment with some non-traditional colours and get a completely different effect.

My daughters response was "It looks just like one of Nannys Christmas ornaments".

Lunch at Goose Arm

A delightfully lazy day here in NL. We spent a few hours visiting our extended family at their camp on Goose Arm. This is definitely off the beaten path and a drive you do not want to attempt without a substantial vehicle. But the resulting scenery is worth the ride. Have a look at the view.

Lunch consisted of moose steak, pork chops, and hotdogs, all on the barbeque. Fresh baked bread, sauteed onions and mushroms, potatoes, followed by lemon pie for dessert. How great a day is that?

I shall hate to go home on Monday.

Happy Canada Day from Corner Brook, Newfoundland. 26 degrees here with blue skies and a few fluffy clouds. I'm sitting at the dining room table in my daughters home, filled with many quilted bits. Here's the summer version of a 4 seasons placemat set I made recently. Can you spot their very playful kitty?

Julie's baking a cheesecake to take to a desert party with some favorite relatives. Fireworks at dusk will top off the day. This is our 4th Canada Day celebration here in NL, and one in which we dearly love to participate.

Every time I see fireworks I am reminded of a kaleidoscope we played with as children. One of my future quilting projects must be a kaleidoscope. Perhaps I'll take my pencil and paper and have inspiration this evening. And there's always Electric Quilt to help me out.

Presently I'm working on a Karen Neary "Yuletide Jewel" which is quite fun. I do love foundation piecing and will post a picture when it's finished. Although I did bring fabric with me, one choice was just not working so a trip to the local fabric shop was in order. However I must confess, I would have stopped in anyway. A delightful shop with friendly and sharing folk. Just like all quilters!!

The Rock!

Here we are in balmy downtown Corner Brook, Newfoundland And I do mean balmy! We left a rainy and cold Nova Scotia, a foggy but smooth ferry ride, and arrived to a sunny 26 degrees. How amazing is that?

Corner Brook is a spectacular city, small as cities go, but with heart stopping scenic views. Situated on the bank of the Humber River with snow capped mountains in the background, this is a favorite walking area of mine. Now guaranteed when you walk down the hill, you must walk up again. So, sneakers on and here we go!

Down Aspen Road, follow the streets to the Glynmill Inn Pond trail, ascend the steep pathways, catch my breath, admire the swans for a minute or two, greet other walkers (everyone say hello in Newfoundland), past the Glynmill Inn and back home. Interestingly enough, we had a shower of warm steamy rain after we arrived home, and, looking out the window over supper, a complete rainbow arc. This truly is a pot of gold for me. Although this is not my first trip to NL, each trip seems like a new adventure.

For all you quilters out there, this is Hilary Rice territory. This amazingly talented and very personable textile artist always makes time for a visit when I'm in the area. I look forward to a first hand viewing of her newest pieces. In speaking with Hilary yesterday, she advised me of her newly revised website. Have a look.

Christmas Cactus or Did I Miss a Season?

I do not have a green thumb. That's Waynes area of expertise. Even though I do allow 3 plants in our house, I threaten, on a regular basis, to toss them out. They are all of the Christmas Cactus variety and have bloomed on occasion, at either Christams or Easter. Well I had to share this with you as, presently, this one is spectacular. Since it is not Christmas or Easter, do you think my cactus is thumbing it's flowers at me? All is now forgiven and I promise not to ever threaten it again :-)

Have a look at the newest quilt offered for sale on The Quilters Net. Each frame has a picture of a fishing expedition, all of which have been fussy cut by Betty. The whole quilt smacks of vibrancy with the unusual use of blue and brown.

The quilt measures in at 90 x 100. To put this in perspective, a queen bed measures 60 x 80. A handquilted beauty at a very attractive price of $485.00 Cdn. Delivery within Canada is included in the price.

Spectacular!

The Quilts, the View, and the People. Donna and the folks at White Point are experts at pulling out all the stops for an event. And this was no exception. From what I called the "anti-anxiety" toolbox filled with tape, scissors, markers, stapler, etc, to the audiovisual equipment, the venue was exceptional.

Following the "Slice, Dice, and Stitch", quilters session, The Quilters Net Website was launched to a most appreciative audience. And on Sunday, we continued with a Quilt Show and Sale. All in all, Mothers Day weekend was a snug hug!

A unique experience for the members of TQN (and me) as well as a new concept for shoppers, the first event was a great success and one we hope to repeat on an annual basis.

The Internet Quilt Market Launch enabled shoppers to view the quilts in real time as all members of TQN were invited to participate. Over 100 items were available to view and purchase.

Quilters from all area of the province attended and conference room Fore was "abuzz" with activity. Karen Miller demonstrated her expertise with house construction (her quilters version) on Sunday and we also had a quilt set up for those who wanted to add a stitch or two.

It was an opportunity for TQN members to meet, get to know one another and share ideas. Loads of laughs, great cookies, too much coffee and just plain fun. Thanks zillions to all of you who sent messages, flowers, hugs, and encouragement. It was truly a team effort.
